To the Presidents and Secretaries of the WPA Member Societies
Dear Colleagues
I am writing on behalf of the WPA Standing Committee on Ethics to ask you a couple of things. It was originally thought that a detailed survey would be more indicated but we all know from personal experience that we are overworked with many obligations, including surveys, so we have decided to just ask you a couple of questions and leave the survey for a more appropriate time.
The basic questions we want to ask you refer to the Madrid Declaration, the basic Ethics Code of our Association, and can be phrased as follows:
What improvements would you suggest, if any, on the current WPA Ethics Guidelines (Madrid Declaration)?
Are there any constraints that hinder the application or promotion of the Madrid Declaration in your country?
If there are constraints, what can the WPA do to help?
The next questions refer to the incorporation of ethics in training, the availability at National Society level of an Ethics Committee and similar structures and functions.
Does the undergraduate Curriculum of Medical Schools in your country include Ethics? Yes r No r I do not know r Please elaborate
Does the curriculum for Psychiatric trainees in your country include Ethics? Yes r No r I do not know r Please elaborate
Do examinations for the specialty of Psychiatry include questions on ethical principles and practice? Yes r No r I do not know r Please elaborate
Does an active Ethics Committee exist in your Association? Yes r No r I do not know r Please elaborate
Does your Association organize courses to promote ethics in Psychiatric practice? Yes r No r I do not know r Please elaborate
What are your future plans for the promotion of Psychiatric Ethics in your country?
The Standing Committee on Ethics will certainly benefit very much from your responses. We need your opinion and guidance and should be grateful for your prompt response. E-mail: gchristodoulou@ath.forthnet.gr Fax No: 0030 210 7242032
With best regards and many thanks in advance
