A research planning confernece focused on Somatic Presentation of Mental Disorders that is sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association(APA) in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the U.S.National Institutes of Health(NIH) was hold in Beijing, China, September 6-8,2006. Around 40 foreign experts and several Chinese experts including Xin Yu, Yanfang Chen, Yueqin Huang, Yizhuang Zou,Jianlin Ji, Zeping Xiao attended this conference.
The purpose of this international conference is to inform and refine future revisions of diagnostic classifications in this area. The conference organized under co-chairs Drs.Arthur Kleinman, Xin Yu,Joel Dimsdale, and Vikram Patel.
This conference focused on three issues: 1. Identification of strengths and weaknesses of the current diagnostic criteria 2. Identification of promising hypotheses that could be tested in the next few years to make the criteria more valid and/or useful 3. Identification of hypotheses that are currently emerging but could only be addressed by significant technological breakthroughs over a longer time period.
This conference is the ninth of a series of 12 international research conferences convened by the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education(APIER), a component of the APA, with funding from NIH. The aim of each conference and related Workgroup activities is to identify specific research needs and opportunities to enhance future revisions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM) and, at the discretion of the WHO leadership, the International Classification of Diseases(ICD). |
