| | History Review of International Exchange | | 2005-2-23 1:48:09 Chinese Society of Psychiatry Zou Yizhuang M.D,Ph.D | China has a long history of International exchange: Silk Road(400AC), Zheng Hes Fleet(1400AC), ...; The TCM exchange among China, Japan and Korea more than 1000 years; Theory of seven-emotion, five-element, three-classification are most important for understanding mental illness in TCM; Herbs, Acupuncture and Strigil were widely used in treatment; TCM Psychotherapy (based on five-element theory) is probably earliest documented psychotherapy in the World; Today, TCM is still used in many countries to treat mental illness.
China works closely with the World Health Organization(WHO)and many other international psychiatry organizations like the World Psychiatry Association(WPA), the World Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation(WAPR) and the International Psycho-geriatric Association. Some of international conferences were held in China during the last 30 years. The First Regional Meeting of WPA in Beijing was hold in 1997 and the Asia-Pacific Conference on Mental Health was in 1998, 2000 and 2002. The Regional Meeting of International Psycho-geriatrics Association and the China-Canada workshop on Geriatric psychiatry were organized in Beijing in 1999. The 1st Chinese-French Psychiatry Conference was hold in Beijing at the end of 1986.
Exchange between China and American: 1898: 1st psychiatry hospital in Guangzhou, by John Kerr (American priest); 1922: Dept of neuropsychiatry in Beijing Union Hospital, began teaching psychiatry, by Rockefeller Foundation; Chinese-American Psychiatry Conference, Beijing 1980, 1988 and 2000 by the CSP and APA;
Exchange between China and Russian: Russian psychiatry had exchange with China during 1950s; Pavlov theory affected Chinese psychiatry strongly during the time, for understanding the mechanism of mental illness; Trained Chinese psychiatrist in Russian, Prof Shen Yucun, Prof. Hou Yi,...;
Exchange between China and Japan: TCM to Japan 1300 years ago; Early 1900, many Chinese students graduated from Japan medical school: Sun Zhongshan, Lu Xun, Yu qinghan (psychiatrist)..., more evidence needed to be reviewed; Some psychiatry exchange were done in Taiwan during 1900 to 1945; First Chinese-Japanese psychiatry Meeting was in Beijing in 1992 by CSP and JSPN, Chaired by Pr. Chen Xueshi and Pr. Kenichi Harada, and agreed holding meeting every 5 years (second 1997 in Japan, third 2002 in Beijing); Mr. Tsuneo Okamoto has sponsored and donated for Morita therapy in China since late 1980s, and help International Meeting Morita Therapy in Beijing in 1995; Dr Toshihide Asai contracted with MOH to train Chinese psychiatrists in Japan during 1986-1997(about 100 psychiatrists).
Exchange between China and Korea: TCM introduce to Korea 1000 years ago; Korea Psychiatry Association invited 10 young Chinese psychiatrists in 2005 for National Congress(KNPA), work shop of Korea, Japan and China; Korea will invite 2 Chinese psychiatrists, have training in Korea on community based psychiatry in 2006 (WHO sponsored);
Exchange among China Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan: Exchange between China Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong is limited, developed slowly, non-official level; Pr. Lin Zongyi, Zeng Wenxing, Zhuang Mingzhe and Lin Keming originally from Taiwan is familiar by Chinese psychiatrists; Pr. Chen Jianai and Pr. Lieh-Mak Felice contributed to help training program by International standard; Pr. Zhao Fengqin for cooperation; In 2005, delegation of Taiwan Psychiatry Association met with CSP in China and exchange gift;
The name we should not forgot: Pr. Kenichi Harada, Mr. Tsuneo Okamoto and Dr Toshihide Asai from Japan; Pr. Lin Zongyi, Zeng Wenxing and Zhuang Mingzhe from Taiwan; Pr. Chen Jianai, Lieh-Mak Felice from Hong Kong; Pr. Shen Yucun and Chen Xueshi from China; Pr. Norman Sartorius from WHO; Pr. Naotaka Shinfuku is well recognized for his persistent contribution to Chinese international exchange and mental health promotion last 25 years.
