After graduating from high school and pass a competitive examination, one could entry medical school and study for 6 years. If they pass the final exam and get medical degree, they could take 3 years of psychiatric residency in psychiatry hospital. About 300 medical students graduate and get into psychiatric residency every year. After passing certain examinations and evaluations during the psychiatry residency, one could become psychiatrist.
After graduate from medical school, some people may continue to have graduate training another 5 to 6 years for master or doctor degree, mainly for improving research experience and ability.

Regular training of primary care professionals is carried out in the field of mental health. In the last two years about 600 personnel were provided training. In 1999, programme for training physicians in mental health from general hospitals was initiated by the WHO/ Beijing Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health. In total, five workshops were held, three in Beijing, one in Hangzhou, one in Guangzhou. About 600 physicians attended them. Since then short training programmes have been conducted by WHO consultants for doctors, nurses and other participants from hospitals, schools, media etc. on mental disorders, communication skills, psychosocial management of stress and trauma. WHO and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are collaborating with Chinese academic institutions in conducting short training programmes of doctors, pediatricians and health care workers in psychosocial management of children and adolescents. Similar programmes in the area of substance abuse are expected in the near future. Trainers training courses have also also been set up.

Scientific Journals
The most famous psychiatry scientific journals in China are Chinese Journal of Psychiatry (official journal of the CSP, quarterly), Chinese Journal of Mental Health (official journal of the CAMH, monthly) and Chinese Journal of Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders. More than 10 National and local psychiatry journals published in China though more and more papers written by Chinese psychiatrists were published on international journals in resent years.
